And the five most overrated

Trev Alberts, on stage again.  This time, the list courtesy of Voluminous (gotta love blogs)-

  • Miami
  • Tennessee
  • Georgia
  • Oklahoma
  • Notre Dame
The Resource reaction?  Hooray!

Some major slugs finally get consideration for "overrated".  UGA's been overrated three years running.  Tennessee same thing.  Oklahoma got exposed last year and if anything they're probably being taken a bit lightly, as they're already written off by most against Texas and Texas A&M.  The Irish are just perennially on this list.  But that comes with being the Irish.  Until another 1993 squad comes around, this is an easy call.

We're a touch hesitant with Miami.  The Canes finally have a balanced roster that isn't so star-laden, and their young quarterbacks could both be superstars.  Last year was a bit of an aberration (or was it?), so this is kind of a holding pattern pick.

Off the top of my head, no real analysis, and based on this year's preseason rankings, I'd add Iowa and Ohio State to the overrated list.

How can Notre Dame be overrated this year when nobody expects them to do much? Maybe he thinks its too much to expect 6 or 7 wins.

Don't know how you can ever make a "most overrated" these days and leave UT-Austin off the list.

And 2 SEC teams overrated??? Cmonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn >;-)

I thought about Texas. Thing is, they've patented this 10-win, lose to Oklahoma thing.

They're still fairly good, ya know? Incredibly 1-dimensional, but they do it so well.

I guess they're overrated, but I think its a silent majority concept where most CFB fans and media are talking Texas up, but in their hearts and minds really aren't behind them. Call it Howard Dean syndrome. It's Rah Rah for Texas right now but most people privately still think Oklahoma will take them to the woodshed again.

Right now, its funny to me but I kind of see Texas beating Okla and then losing to A&M. That's the Longhorn way.

Keep on spitting on the SEC. The fact is that except for the Big 10 (85-89), the SEC has a winning record against every major conference in the country, including a lop-sided record against your beloved pac 10.

Why has Georgia been over-rated for the last (3) years. Compared to whom? Break this down for me.

Georgia's record over the last (3) years is 34-5. And, that's against excellent competition such as Tenn, Florida, Auburn, L.S.U., Fla. State, Wisconsin, and Purdue.

Who should have been rated above them that wasn't? Surely you're not going to say Boise State, Lousiville, etc.

Sonny boy, my dog knows more about college football than you, and he's dead.

You keep on trashing good football teams because this fall I'll be back here to listen to your pitiful nonsensical excuses as to why these teams you've labeled as "sofisticated","resilient",
"complicated",etc.(which by the way nobody has a clue what in the world that means) are getting their butts handed to them. Ofcourse that might not be the case because none of them except Florida plays any semblance of a schedule.

These teams like Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn, and L.S.U. have been rated high recently because people including coaches who actually know something about college football voted for them.

And, as for Trev, one day he's your idiot, and the next day he's your hero?

For what it's worth, I find it comforting whenever Trev predicts something. You can almost always bet the othe way and be profitable.

Tennessee overrated three years running come.....please. You should just replace Tennessee with the entire Pac 10 minus USC. But thanks for the link anyway

concerning the statement that "UGA's been overrated three years running." Well, lets simply look at the polls, and where UGA was ranked at the start of the season compared to where they were ranked at the end of it. Afterall, if UGA has been overrated for three years, we should clearly see that in the polls, right? For example, we'll probably find that, for a given year, UGA started the season at #5 and ended the year at #12, thus they were overrated since they finished 7 spots lower than expected. With that in mind...

In '02, UGA began the season ranked #11, and ended up at #3. In '03 UGA began the season at #11, and ended up at #6. Last year, UGA started the year at #3, and ended the year at #6. If you add it all up using a plus/minus system (pluses for spots gained in the poll, minuses for spots lost in the poll), you have UGA at +10. In other words, for the past three seasons UGA has ended the season 3 spots higher in the poll on average than from where we started. Thus, if anything we're actually underrated (when looking at pre-season polls compared to the final poll), not overrated. So much for UGA being overrated, huh?

One last thing---this is the lowest UGA has been ranked to start a season since Richt's first year in '01. Yet people are still calling them overrated. Makes perfect sense to me.

Actually, we were only overrated last year.

In 2002 and 2003 we finished higher than our ranking:

One last thing, UGA's record is 36-6 the last 3 years, among the best in all of college football. And remember, UGA plays one of the toughest schedules in the nation yearly. Their SOS was ranked #2 in '02, and around #8-9 in both '03 and '04. Yet they still were able to put up such an incredible record while playing tough competition. Only Oklahoma, USC, and Boise State can claim a better reocrd over the same period, and Boise State doesn't count since they don't play anybody all season long (playing Nevada, San Jose St., Idaho, SMU, Hawaii and the like yearly is anything but impressive.)

But hey, if you consider all the facts I provided above and still think UGA is overrated, well, not only are you not a very knowledgeable football fan, you also aren't all that bright.

FWIW, I used the coaches poll to establish my plus minus system above. Obviously the site linked above used another poll (I assume the AP.)

I didn't see the ESPN segment about this, but was Trev talking about who is going to be overrated for just this upcoming season, or overrated in the last few years????

You are all pussies! FSU is the best team every year. Trev wears big ten ladies panties....and Mark "thank you, sir" May chews on them.

Now screw you all. Later....I gotta go shine Burt's shoes.

Does HP=CFR?

-Both seem to have a strong disliking for the SEC.

-Both seem to have a very strong affinity for this "Big Six" group of offenses.

-CFR continues to post under the name "Admin"...who is CFR and why does he feel the need to conceal his identity?

-CFR has links to just about every college football blog in the universe, whereas HP has not a single link on his site...but would he need any if he were also running CFR?

-The sites have an almost eerily dissimilar look...is it by design?

Things that make you go hmmm...

HP's a much more knowledgeable CFB fan than myself.

There are many others out there with similar opinions as HP and CFR. But until now they've been muted, and definitely not on radio or television.

Anyway, interesting parallels. It's pretty clear we're not the same people though, just look at the writing styles. I have been following HP since near its inception and have conversed quite a bit with the guy. We share a similar overall belief about CFB.

Even if we were the same, what difference would it make? The opinions and insight are what matter here. Seeking identities means you're not paying attention to the arguments.

Texas doesn't beat many top 5 teams, but how many do? Usually, only 3-4 teams in the nation do a year...

I hate Texas because I grew up in Houston hearing people kiss their ass, but they manage to beat the teams their supposed to, something that many teams in the NCAA cannot lay claim to.

As for teams being overrated, my criteria is not preseason rank here, but end-of-season. If you were the 8th best team but got ranked 3rd, you're overrated, right?

"As for teams being overrated, my criteria is not preseason rank here, but end-of-season. If you were the 8th best team but got ranked 3rd, you're overrated, right?"

Actually, the only rational way to rate whehter a team is overrated or underrated is to compare the pre-season ranking to the final ranking. Anything is completely subjective.

Now you can argue all day the qualifications of those who rate the teams - but you cannot argue which ones they loved at the start that didn't get it done (overrated) and which did better than they were expected to by the same people (underrated).

And as you can see from the link, UGA has been underrated more often than not over the past several years.

Just because something is subjective doesn't make it irrational. Aren't the polls themselves subjective? It's not like the team with the best record is ranked #1, second best record #2 and so on. If a team finishes up ranked #5, and you look at them and think "they didn't beat anybody! The next 15 teams behind those guys coulda killed 'em!" then that team is overrated, regardless of where they started the season.

Now all that being said, there are a lot of teams that Georgia could have beat two years ago. Last year's team, however . . . OVERRATED! You're telling me there weren't 6 teams in the country better than Georgia? Please, try closer to 12-15.
hehe
