Saturday's slate
Check out the slate here.
I'll be out of town, don't know when I'll return, but obviously will be tuning into the games.
Things to look for:
Can Ohio State cover the spread against Miami of Ohio? Who is their back? What will Ted Ginn do? Can Justin Zwick in his 1-game tryout finally move the passing offense?
Will Bowling Green fall flat against Wisconsin's defense or can they continue to look like a legitimate national offense?
Does Tennessee swiftly end the Darrell Hackney hype?
Watch USC/Hawai'i. What trends emerge on offense and defense against an unusual opponent on the road? Does the new hydra-like offensive coordinator position thing... know what its doing? What will Reggie and Matt do? What USC freshmen and reserves make names for themselves?
Will Vince Young have another Michigan performance against LA-Lafayette?
What to make of new Nebraska quarterback Zac Taylor? Is their offense still a mess?
Can Texas A&M escape Clemson? What will Reggie McNeal do?
How ugly will the Notre Dame/Pittsburgh game be?
Can Auburn live up to its promise and blow Georgia Tech out of the water?
Will Mike Price year II show continued progress at UTEP?
And for Sunday's games---
Is Perry Patterson a great young quarterback that nobody's talking about, or a dud? Watch Jason Gwaltney's debut for West Virginia. He's behind another pretty good back, so he may be limited early on.
Can Brian Brohm get over the nerves of his first start and keep Louisville's offensive machine rolling against Kentucky?
Can BYU's super receiver Todd Watkins light up Boston College?
Will Colorado/Colorado State be yet another thriller?
How will Nate Longshore do in his California debut? Will the Bears play backup Joseph Ayoob? What will Marshawn Lynch do? Why in the world are they playing Sacramento State?
Tune into Boise State/UGA. No questions, just answers.
I have no thoughts on Florida. It will take them a few games to really get a grasp of the Urban Meyer offense. Until then they're just playing ball kind of blind.
Does Navy still have that offensive magic of last year? Can Maryland contain their run?
Can NC State upset a vulnerable Virginia Tech? Tech's defense looks ferocious, but so does the Wolfpack's defensive line against a pretty shaky Marcus Vick.
Feel free to comment below on whatever strikes you and I'll respond to the more interesting comments when I get back.
Welcome back, college football!
I'm still figuring out a daily schedule for what will go on at Resource during the week, but count on my weekly Heisman and Top Teams rankings/lists, of course, lots of brief analysis of interesting stats, controversial banter, some more Katrina updates (Outside the Lines on ESPN did a nice show tonight about the Tulane team's relocation---pretty sad), and much more.

I think a couple of blogs (this one & this one) are in for a pretty rough week. Both have spent the better part of the off-season trumpeting a new breed of offenses. 'Gang of Six' this and 'Big Six' that. After watching Utah struggle... -

SIX turnovers thru two halves. You do the math.
Forget names like Jermaine Wiggins, Randy McMichael, Ben Watson and Leonard Pope... we never throw to TE's. Nevermind Patrick Pass and Vernon Haynes in New England and Pittsburgh, respectively. None of these guys that played between the hedges can grasp a complicated offense, they've never played in one! how could they?!
Bwaaaaaaaahahahahahaha!
Go dawgs!
Bwaaaaaaaahahahahahaha!
Go dawgs!
Admin ran his mouth about us, and our conference, all preseason. That offense was sooo complicated, I'm still confused I tell ya. Boy I feel stupid just like admin predicted, I'm sure our boys do too right about now. How about big bad Z? How about that high powered offense? If we've told you once, we've told you a thousand times, it's different down here, we play a little something called DEFENSE! Boise got a taste of that today. Just like they do every other time they play somebody from a REAL conference. I would take a jab at Louisville and Conf USA/the Big Least right now, but I'm still laughing too hard over TCU dominating Oklahoma.
The only thing most Dawg fans will admit to being wrong about is the whole weather thing. Ironically, not only was it not very hot or humid compared to a week or so ago... but WE were the ones cramping up. Still, Shockley was damn near flawless, his passer rating and stats speak for themselves, and would have been even better if it weren't for a half a dozen dropped passes.
It's simple really, all we want is respect. I think we took yet another step toward gaining that today, at least our players did on the field. Dislike our fans all you want, but we're loyal and we believe in our team, and that's all we've been saying all along.
GO DAWGS, G.A.T.A. Shock!
BTW, HeismanPundit suspended Utah from the Gang of Six, and I'm assuming that Boise has earned a ticket out as well. The Big 4 now? It must be fun to just drop the losers every year and add the winners, then find a common thread to base an entire philosophy on.
PS...You know if I can find a way to meet Jared Zabransky?
At this point UGA doesn't have to rebuild, we simply reload. Unless Boise was just THAT overrated, in either case, all these silly West Coast blogs were wrong and probably won't admit it and just eat the crow they deserve.
Auburn most definitely DID lose more than UGA did, although the guys in my pickem can tell ya I had that one picked a long time ago.
As I also knew with Weis > Wanny,
I don't think anybody saw the TCU thing comin, but any idiot could see the condoms would roll over the rainbows.
Hackney hype? Believe it.
As should you believe most everything Corso has said or otherwise implied so far ie South Carolina being a long way from good, and Tennessee and Florida being overrated, with Georgia having as good a shot as anyone in the East. Check the schedules...
We'll see how it goes from here, but one thing's for sure: These blogs have been exposed already for what they are - nothing more than a couple of bitter geek's way of getting back at the evil East Coast biased mainstream media. Oh, and that the latter was apparently right all along.
In my opinion, Boise was severely overrated--I really don't think the way Georgia played (with all of the drops and whatnot) will be good enough to beat Tennessee and Florida away from home. I think Boise is looking at a 7-4 season (Oregon St, BG, Fresno)--which means, in terms of results, Georgia didn't do anything more today than Florida or Tennessee did today (i.e., beat a mid-major who is going to finish 7-4, at home). Georgia was more impressive in victory than UT or UF, but the other teams didn't implode the way Boise did (of course, Georgia's D might have had something to do with that).
So, in the end, it's a good win, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking this team is going to finish 10-1.
We're not here because we're proclaiming UGA to be all-world already... we're here because this guy talked so much sh** early on about us, and it's time to see him eat crow.
Maybe you don't see Georgia going 10-1, but I certainly haven't ruled that out yet...
UT and UF were not all that impressive today, and certainly UGA was the best of the three. But, what I'm saying is that the opponents of the three were probably closer than people think--whereas before the game, I'd bet most would have thought UGA had the toughest opponent. Combine that with a fat win and people will get overly excited. My opinion is that Boise wasn't the best of the three (I think UAB probably was), so we should curb our enthusiasm a bit.
Georgia may well go 10-1--hell, they may go 11-0. Who would have thought before today that GT might end up being our toughest opponent?
Our coaches will get us ready to correct what few mistakes we made today. Considering the line, RBs and Leonard Pope didn't even play that well and we still crushed em?! I'm stoked man. This all reminds me of Clemson in '03. Everybody said then we'd get upset, and we blew em out. Then they said don't get too excited, and Richt managed to takes us back to the SEC CG with a green line and true frosh RB.
Again, I like our chances good as any this year! ; )
I am a little worried about next week, actually--it was an emotional win today, and last year the Dawgs really came out flat against UT after an emotional win over LSU. SCarolina looked pretty bad against UCF, but Spurrier is Spurrier and if the Dawgs don't come to play it could bite them in the butt.
The thing you have to realize about why UGA has a really good chance to run the table is that the toughest game is that trip to Knoxville. Is anyone afraid of
Neyland anymore? I'm sure not. Not if they promise to start Ainge or Clausen. After that, Jacksonville is always tough, and Tech is going to put up a fight, but that is it for even MODERATELY tough games.
Oh yeah, and we have DJ. Is anybody else worried with him under center anymore? In response to the guys saying how UGA wasn't that sharp, well, it WAS the first game. The drops were disconcerting, indeed, but you have to be impressed with the discipline of only having two or three penalties. 0 turnovers? Also nice to see in a first game. As much as people are saying that game we played isn't good enough to beat UT or Florida, I think it is. Very few mental mistakes were made, and the only reason we didn't rush for 300 yards was that Boise kept 9 in the box on at least 85% of the plays. I have felt all off-season that the '05 Dawgs would be better than the '04 team, and I didn't see anything to make me think otherwise.
