Some NFL draft facts

Maybe I'm blind, but it doesn't look like the NFL website has released the names of declared, certified underclassmenwho have entered the draft.  Frustrating.  FanBlogs makes a run at the list, but until the NFL releases the names, there may be surprises unknown.  Another effort at the list is done by position at MyOpinionOnSports.

What I did find was a story from NFL talent guru Gil Brandt after last year's draft.

Here are some items mentioned by Brandt that may be relevant this year:

  • "Southern California has had the highest number of players drafted in the first round of the draft with 63.  Notre Dame is second with 60, Ohio State third with 59 and Miami (Fla.) fourth at 57."
  • Oklahoma led all schools with 11 drafted players last year.  The Sooners were followed by Florida State (9), Wisconsin (7) and Virginia (7).
  • Among conferences, the SEC had the most players selected at 37.  Trailers included the ACC (36), Big 12 (34), Pac-10 (33) and Big Ten (30).
  • Last year's draft was heavy with offensive tackles (26), linebackers (36) and cornerbacks (30).  That bodes poorly for back-of-the-pack players at those positions this year.
  • Here's looking at you, USC: "Auburn had three players hear their names called in the first 10 picks.  It's the most since Penn State accomplished the feat in 1995.  Auburn is only the fourth school since 1967 to have two running backs taken in the first round.  The others were 1971 (Ohio State), 1986 (Florida) and 1987 (Texas A&M).  Auburn is also the first school to have two running backs and a quarterback all taken in the first round."
  • Notre Dame and USC are tied for most No. 1 overall selections at five apiece.

And, from my own investigations:

  • Although USC and Notre Dame are tied with 5 No. 1 selections, USC trails Notre Dame 7 to 3 in overall No. 2 selections.  There is a chance Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart could go 1-2 this year.
