The Draft's Biggest Bargain

This entry from Tommy Trojan Blog chronicles some recent NFL personnel moves that "screw LenDale White":

  • Edgerrin James signs with Arizona Cardinals (#10 selection in 2006 draft)
  • Baltimore Ravens (#13 selection in 2006 draft) retain Jamal Lewis (who looks like he's on his last few tanks of gas, having seen him up close at an NFL game last year) and also sign Mike Anderson from the Denver Broncos.

I think LenDale White's a top of the draft talent and a pretty unique player.  His value cannot be higher right now if he does in fact slip past the first 13 or so choices.  The team that selects him is arguably getting a guy who if not for circumstance (see above) would have gone off the board much earlier.  He'll be a bargain, getting paid far less than what he was expected to earn off his rookie contract.  Couple that with the motivation of sliding in the draft, playing on a better than expected team, and having very little tread on those tires (there's a reason he worships Reggie Bush and that's because Mr. Heisman saved LenDale hundreds of college carries---just 541 total carries, 5 career games with 20+ carries).  Those are going to be some very fresh legs going against some tired veteran legs his first few years in the league.

Some midlevel NFL team might just get a heck of an early Christmas present on draft day.  I have to wonder if there are a handful of teams in the 20th-30th selection range who are thinking what I'm thinking and are looking for ways to move up in the draft in that 11-15 range to snag that guy.

Potential 9,000 Yard Career + Fresh Legs + Gifted Red Zone Runner and Scoring Machine + Depreciated Rookie Salary = Angry, Motivated Big Back = Tremendous Production Under Rookie Contract

I betcha at least five smart GM's have that formula figured out and are sweating nightly hoping to figure out a way to grab him if he slides.  It's a similar formula as what happened with Randy Moss, in that you had an immense physical talent slide in the draft.  There's incredible motivation in that that pays for itself in on field production.  Moss never played better than his first two seasons as he worked off the aggression and frustration on every team that refused to select him.  The difference is White doesn't have Moss' "personality" issues but won't be at a loss for similar motivation.

Imagine if someone like the Patriots get him at #21, or the Bears at #26.  Those are already good teams that could use a little more run help.  Situations like this are how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer in the NFL.  I hope those guys in the top 15 don't aren't so stupid as to let that happen.

Thanks for the pub. I have a question, now that the Raiders signed Brooks at QB, they no longer need to take a QB that high so who do the Raiders take? There should be at least one of the top defensive prospects out there, most likely Huff. But in regards to this post, do the Raiders possibly take a chance at LenDale White at #7?

No prob.

I have no idea what the Raiders will do. I could see them taking a flier on Vince Young, even. They had success converting Ronald Curry to receiver. Could do the same with Vince, although I think he's very much a quarterback until proven different.

What I see on their roster: Justin Fargas, Lamont Jordan, Zach Crockett, Omar Easy-Basically two fullbacks and two combo backs. That's already a lot of bulk in the backfield, they might be more in the market for a smaller change-of-pace back than White.
