Mr. Personality

Former all world linebacker recruit Willie Williams (he of the steak and lobster dinners and hotel arrests) has apparently gone AWOL.

The (soon to be former?) Miami Hurricane is rumored to be transferring, and CaneSport.com has left us with this cryptic phone message on Williams' voicemail.

Cuba Cuba?

Update No. 1:

Some clarification from the blog of Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel's Omar Kelly.

Is Willie AWOL? Yes he has been at times this summer. Is he presently? That's unclear, but one place he's not is in Cuba. That's just Willie's sense of humor flaring up.

Is it mandatory for student-athletes to participate in voluntary summer workouts? It is not! I repeat. It is not.

Are there punishments for a student-athlete who does not participate in voluntary workouts? There sure are, like falling to the bottom of the depth chart.

Has that happened to Da Predator? If he's missed a significant amount of work with his teammates it probably has knowing Randy Shannon, who has handed nothing to Willie since his controversial acceptance at UM [a move I support].

How does Willie feel about that? I'm guessing here since we're dealing with fiction, but based on his 3-year plan to get to the NFL - which seems a bit silly now considering he probably won't become a starter till year four unless there's a serious injury this season - he probably doesn't like it.

Like Kelly, I've never found Williams to be a menace, just a guy who makes incredibly dumb decisions at times.  He's the classic enigma, a human teddy bear who once desperately frightened a woman in an innocent but unnecessary bear hug then crudely insulted her.  It's hard to tell how to pass judgment on such incidents.  I think the guy just doesn't know any better sometimes.

I certainly don't think he's a thug or a menace.  But he is a guy with a record.  In the playbook of a bitter few that's enough to declare the entire Miami program corrupt, their coach callous towards his school's female student body.  Nonsense, always has been.

Anyway, he's out...somewhere.  Few really know.

He'll have a good book deal in a few years, the guy's just a larger than life personality and it would be a shame to see him leave the Hurricanes because he's built from the same mold as so many of those swaggering '80's 'Canes.

Update No. 2:

According to CaneSport he's ($) asked the University of Miami for his scholarship release.  The story doesn't speculate on where he might end up.
