After Week Six
Monday, October 22, 2007 at 07:24PM I've been distracted with the whole California's Burning thing going on today.
I have several friends and family in San Diego who are affected so I've been busy today trying to figure out what's going on and where they are etc.
So far so good although my friend Stephanie had to evacuate her Rancho Penasquitos home and my friend Victor's parents had to leave their Poway home. My brother is in the Sabre Springs area near to both Stephanie and Victor's parents but amazingly hasn't had to evacuate. He's approximately that black dot furthest south (of the four black dots) on the map below. All friends and their families in Los Angeles seem to be fine and free from fire as well.
Almost forgot: my friend Matt's parents were evacuated from their Escondido house near Del Dios Highway.

Of little surprise, there's a college football angle here. San Diego State football has a home game this weekend against BYU. Practices are probably limited or terminated and depending on the future course of the fire the game could conceivably be postponed. The Aztecs play their games in Qualcomm Stadium which right now is an evacuation site similar to the Sugar Bowl during Hurricane Katrina.
What a week of weather, huh?

Much of the community I spent my HS years in is charred beyond recognition.
My brother's safe, hasn't had to evacuate, no word yet on Steph's house, sounds like Matt's folks' home (as well as a home his brother owns nearby) in Escondido is a likely victim, no word on the house of my friend Victor's parents in Poway although some homes very near to it burned down. His parents also run their old house in the Westwood section of Rancho Bernardo as a rental property and that neigborhood was particularly hard hit so I'm not holding out much hope for that residence.
Plus a few scattered people I remember from back in high school it looks like quite a few of their homes were burned down in various parts of town.
I'll be in San Diego in a few days to visit my brother and some friends in LA, had planned a trip there a few months back so it's odd timing and bound to be sobering. At least everyone's alright but damn.
His parents and brother had evacuated but actually saw the house on TV last night with a firefighter on the porch and a neighbor's house already engulfed.
Craaaaaaaaaaazy.
