This and That

My extended getaway has been fun but I'm cutting it off prematurely to add some content on here.  I miss y'all.

If you haven't already noticed I've left well enough alone as far as the NFL draft.  The process is addicting but I simply don't care enough about the NFL to figure out why it's so uncomfortable shoe-horning unique college players into its one size fits all style of play.

Reggie Bush and Vince Young were once every 25 year type players in college and have done well enough in the NFL, but their careers may yet be a disappointment.  Michael Vick's story is well documented.  There's disturbing mean-spirited talk about quality guys like Troy Smith and Dwayne Jarrett.  It's all a bit much.

The draft should be an exciting time to see where good players go and imagine what they might become.  The NFL plays such a mundane game that we sadly know that all but a handful of players will be disappointments.

OOC Skeds

Someone asked if I will add entries about the OOC skeds of other conferences (see: SEC and Pac-10).  I hadn't planned on it but that sounds like a good idea.  Unfortunately some teams are still adding that last opponent this late in the game and I just hate an incomplete entry so I may just hold off.  Stay tuned.

***
I had the notion recently to "adopt a team" on here.  I could provide random fan-like updates or whatever throughout the season about say, Nebraska or Buffalo or whoever.  Nothing too serious, just for laughs and perhaps to be of some informative value.  Let me know if you would like to have a certain school represented and I'll add them to consideration.

***
I realize I've annoyed my loyal Auburn-loving readers quite a bit on here.  Perhaps we can come to some kind of peace through "Auburn Reconciliation Week" on here?  If you're interested, pass along some ideas on how to have some fun with this, perhaps sharing campfire stories about the greatness of Bo Jackson and Pat Dye and the incredible Tommy Tuberville era.

In all seriousness I'm sure we could have some fun with this, there's plenty positive to say about Auburn and plenty more that is just plain interesting.  Let me know.

Does this adopted team need to be really good or nationally relevant? Because I'd nominate one of the Directional Michigan schools, just for fun. Give Charlie Batch some love and follow Eastern Michigan.

Anyone.

It might help to name a team with some media resources behind it so I can be at least mildly informed (and informative). Buffalo, I just don't know how much any newspaper cares about them for example and I doubt they have much of a Scout or Rivals presence.

LSU's the school to watch this year. With their schedule and returning talent, a run is not out of the question. Give the unknown of a) a new offensive co-ordinator, b) Les Miles' coaching ability, and c) a new QB derby, as well as good old-fashioned "SEC speed", they'll certainly have an interesting year.

Plus, with an OOC matchup with VA Tech, a season-opening tilt with Miss. State, and nationally televised games with Tulane, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, probably Alabama and South Carolina, you'll certainly have a good basis for comparison with other teams.

One question, does Vandy have "SEC speed?"

CFR,
The Buffalo News does a decent job covering UB, although usually it depends on how good or bad the Bills are playing. I think the novelty of your idea is interesting because your basically covering a team nobody covers. Picking some middle or bottom tier MAC or Sun Belt team is original, its fresh, and its interesting. We should have a Blogger "adopt-a-team" campaign where different bloggers sign on to cover obscure or low level teams.

Western Michigan might be somewhat workable.

Hence the quotations. As an SEC fan, I don't buy into the SEC speed mentality at all. It's taken on a life of it's own and a theory like that can't cast a wide net because there will always be contradictary examples.

I like the pick a team option. One thing I like about one of your blogging bretheren, Sunday Morning QB, is his undying love for Southern Miss. We're not reading endless missives about "OMG SEC SPEED!!!" or the merits of whether a guy should have 4 or 5 stars in recruiting, but there's just as much passion there as there is for the folks who are fans of the big boys. One of the best things about CFB is that no matter who you're a fan of, somewhere there are diehards living and dying with every game, and that passion and excitement exists at the lower levels as well as in the BCS. Heck, you could even go with one of the HBCU's who probably get more talk about their bands rather than the teams on the field.

I think we've got something with this. We should extend it to I-AA teams too. Basically adopt a team to blog about.

Adopt the Hoosiers.

While your willingness to extend an olive branch is commendable, why would you want to reconcile yourself to Auburn?

Take it from someone who is separated from Auburn by a state line, 115 years' worth of rivalry, and about that many I.Q. points . . . if Auburn fans hate you, it means you're doing something right.
