BCS Odds

A little over a month left until the season, here's the early lines for BCS National Champion from VegasInsider.

Notable: With the pundits, LSU is generally viewed as a preseason No. 2 team, but they are a bit less favored with the oddsmakers.  I wonder if this has anything to do with it?  Wisconsin is quietly one of the favorites.  They've been down for a few years now but it's still strange to see Florida State not near the top of lists like these.  That can't last.

I have no faith that Bobby Bowden will pull FSU back to relevance. Maybe it's just because he irritates me, but I firmly believe he is fully capable of holding FSU in high mediocrity for any length of time.

He's had a great career, but honestly, I won't shed any tears when he retires. Just like I won't shed any tears when Brett Favre retires. I have plenty of respect for their accomplishments, but there comes a point when I just want someone to go away.

Except for Florida, all those teams with odds better than LSU have better odds because, they don't play LSU.

I agree that Les is probably lacking compared to some other coaches but, with his talent he's going to have to really try hard to lose 2-3 games.

What an idiotic statement by Dawgy. USC has the best odds because 10 out of the 11 players from the defense that stuffed Michigan in the Rose Bowl are back. And there is a Heisman Trophy candidate at QB, a veteran offensive line and a horde of blue-chip running backs.

This year LSU lost too much talent to the NFL to go all the way (much like USC last season).

Phil, apparently you don't understand my statement which makes you the idiot. It's fairly obvious to most people with a 3rd grade education that the odds are partly based on who's on each team's schedule.

While my statement had nothing to do with usc I will respond you're boast about usc beating Michigan 32-18? Just who was it that Michigan beat last year? Let's see........NOBODY.

I would remind you that LSU returns 8 starters to the defense that gave up 14 pts.to ND, the same ND that scored 24 pts. on usc's defense...at usc. Do your homework homer.

All I know is I flew to Vegas to put money down on the Michigan State Spartans..... 400 to 1 odds... Can't beat that. See article about the wager. http://blog.spartymsu.com/2007/06/08/viva-la-sparty.aspx

scUM (The Wolverines) won't be #1 in the BCS, Lloyd Carr can't get out of a Cereal Bowl, let alone a Rose Bowl..., smart money is USC or Florida. Their recruiting has been too strong over the last 5 years...

Go Spartans !! With my 400 to 1 bet to win the BCS !!!

smart money not on Florida this year:new QB plus new defense plus SEC all combined make a very very strong argument for a minimum of one loss, if not more. You are right about recruiting, although there was a one year lull (Urban's first year) due to defections, injury, and other reasons, so the team is very bottom heavy this year. Next year and the year after are a different story.

Dawgy, would that be the same LSU defense that gave up 31 points to Arkansas, a team that only managed to score 14 against USC?

As for Michigan, they beat two teams that each won bowl against opponents from the mighty SEC, including a 12-1 Wisconsin squad.
July 21, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterTorBear
TorBear, that would be the same LSU who's conference was 6-3 in bowl games and 3-1 heads up against the pac(1)0

Thanks for you complement "mighty SEC". You don't usually see something like that on a blog like this.

BTW, you must be a Cal fan? If you are, get ready for you ass-beating when Tennesse shows up in a few weeks.

Trying to change the subject now, are we, Dawgy? Since you didn't address my points about Michigan, I'll assume you're conceding that you were wrong to say that Michigan didn't beat anybody.

In regards to the Pac 10 vs. the SEC, while I admit the SEC was a better conference last year, I wouldn't thump my chest about your 3-1 head-to-head too much if I were you. All four of those games were road matches for the Pac 10, and two of them matched SEC elite teams vs Pac 10 teams that have been bottom-feeders, of late.

As for, September 1, I've watched too many games over the years to go out on a limb by making a bold prediction as you just did. What I can tell you with reasonable certainty, though, is that Tennessee won't be facing a team with a rookie QB, and won't have an All-American receiver mismatched against a CB who's never played a down of college football.

Just because Michigan beat 2 bowl teams doesn't qualify them for anything. There were numberous teams last year who beat 2 bowl teams.

As for Arkansas scoring 14 pts. on usc, I believe that was the first game of the season and Mcfadden was playing hurt. Do you remember it that way?

Who's chest-thumpin? I just stated the facts.

So if I search the archives of this blog I won't find where you've made a prediction? Ever? What's wrong with it anyway? It's done here my most everyday. Just part of the fun. What limb are you talking about? I've bet no one's life or money. If you've watched all the football (I bet it's 90% pac (1)0) that you say, you should be able to have an opinion.

In all seriousness, I think that Tennessee will be down. If Cal can stop their running game I think Cal wins. I just said "ass-whopping" to rile you up. Worked didn't it? You pac 10 people are so sensitive. Must be something about the west coast?

"Just because Michigan beat 2 bowl teams doesn't qualify them for anything. There were numberous teams last year who beat 2 bowl teams."

Let's recap: You said Michigan didn't beat anybody. Since Michigan, in fact, beat 11 teams last year, I assumed you meant they didn't beat anybody good, so I pointed out two teams that they beat that most people would say were pretty good. Wisconsin finished at #7 in the polls; if that didn't qualify them as "somebody" in your book, just what does a team have to do to be "somebody" (other than play in the SEC)?

"As for Arkansas scoring 14 pts. on usc, I believe that was the first game of the season and Mcfadden was playing hurt."

It was also the first game for USC, too. And they were breaking in a new QB and new running backs. And they were on the road.

"Who's chest-thumpin? I just stated the facts."
Some of them, anyway.

As for predictions, no I don't make preditions. Not on the outcomes of individual games, anyway. For example, while I think Cal will be a good team next year that will be capable of beating every team on its schedule, I expect we'll lose 2-3 games. I won't predict opponents will beat us, though.

When it comes to Cal vs. Tennessee, I think Cal's offense will perform much better this year than it did in last year's game. I also don't expect that Tennessee will get the kind of big play TD's they scored last year. That said, any Cal fan will tell you that lack of experience on the DL is our weak link right now, so stopping the Vols running game might be a problem.
