Associated Press Poll Open To All

See my entry at FanHouse.

First glance: This looks like a good idea.  I might change my mind after I sleep on it a bit.  I wouldn't have put Appalachian State in my top 25 if I were an AP voter, but it's nice that a hypothetically qualified team is now eligible to be ranked.

It's remarkable what that game has done to the national sport landscape in just a few days.  The videos over the internet of cheering Ohio State and Penn State fans, the Appalachian State students jacking the goalpost and planting it on the chancellor's yard (with the assistance of police!), the opening up of AP voting rules.  Wow.

How many of you would have put Appalachian State in your top 25?  I'm deeply curious.

I'ld vote them into the top 25. I saw them play; they have excellent speed and good lines on both sides of the ball. This may be an anomoly for them or they may have such talent every year; I don't know. But this year, they can beat 10 of the top 25, without question. They would stomp Notre Dame.

I think about 55 teams would stomp ND this year.

Not sure about App State in the Top 25, hard to tell much from one game. Although I agree with Mike that their speed was surprising, I would have expected that they wouldn't be able to run with a big time program.

How big of a team are they? Are we talking 250 pound O-Lineman, or do they have some big boys? Link available, CFR?

Since it's the week 2 poll, I think it's arguable that Appalachain State put in the most impressive performance of the year; I believe it was SMQ who said he would have put them as No. 1 in his BlogPoll.

That said, there's no way they could be in the top 25 after this week because of their schedule; people thought Boise State's schedule was soft last year? How about a whole heaping helping of Wofford, Lenoir-Rhyne, the Citadel and Elon?

As a symbolic gesture, sure they should be ranked this week. Not when they're 11-0 after playing a schedule that would have any I-A school crucified.
