One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Hmm ...

The question has changed from, "Will There Ever Be a College Football National Championship Game?" to "How Soon Will It Happen?"

Sources in several conference offices, athletic directors and television networks told The Post that support is steadily growing for a "Plus-1," format in which there will be a national championship game following the playing of two "semifinal games."

The first title game could be played in 2011.

Don't do it guys.  Brian Cook says "not likely" to this latest, more suble (less Machen-esque) push for a playoff or something like it.

There definitely needs to be a playoff system in college football. NCAA baseball and basketball have playoffs. Fans love it. This will eliminate shared national champions. It seems like every year there is controversy with who deserves to be the national champions. College football is long overdue for playoffs. The fans want to see teams earn the title instead of being voted the national champs.

I disagree with your blanket statement: "Fans love it." It would be considerably better if you said, "Some fans love it"; I am a fan, and I would be deeply disappointed to see a playoff system in college football. Those other fans listed on the left feel the same way, and they represent other fans who also feel that way.

Kris...welcome.
Stick around for a while, read some back posts, keep an open mind.

CFR: Maybe you could compile a link to all previous postings/whatnot on this site (like "blogroll" but instead "arguments against playoffs roll") so that new visitors can go to one place to learn why some of us disagree with the playoff argument, in detail, without having to rehash the debate every single time...
